HARO: How does remote work change the performance review conversation?

Performance reviews are stressful for everyone–managers and employees. In a study of 1,000 workers, roughly 22% reported calling in sick at least once to avoid a stressful performance review.

Having a performance review conversation remotely may mitigate that stress for some, but for others, it can create more anxiety.

For example, managers used to board room meetings, one-on-ones, and the cubicle-and-water-cooler setting of an in-house team environment, may not realize how much they rely on non-verbal cues and body language to receive or convey a message. If they struggle with object permanence, they may miss out on an individual’s work and team contributions entirely.

Similarly, employees who rely on a physical office space to provide discipline, focus, and clear separation of work/life, may have struggled being productive from home this past year. Between the career insecurity, isolation, and Zoom fatigue, it’s no wonder performance reviews thrum with ominous undertones.
